Now I’ve always known that Hush Puppies are something you eat. However, when I was a kid, there was a shoe that came out call Hush Puppies.
It’s a given, I’m not going to be talking about a shoe or better yet, telling you how to make one.
This is the real deal. Another delicious recipe, that is quick and very simple to make.
- 1 cup Corn Meal
- 1/2 cup Flour
- 1 tsp. Baking Powder
- 1/4 tsp. Baking Soda
- 1 tsp. Salt
- 5 tbls. Onion, finely chopped *
- 1 cup Buttermilk (or 3 tbls POWDERED Buttermilk)
- 1 Egg, beaten well
Mix dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients, mixing until smooth. Drop by teaspoonfuls into hot shortening. Cook until brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot as a compliment to main course.
Makes 2 dozen.
This can be served in place of corn bread or anytime you would like a change of pace from biscuits, crescents or dinner rolls.
* Optional (I’m not a fan of onions in Hush Puppies, so I’ve made this optional. I’ve had it both ways and it’s very delicious either way.)
