Homemade Ice Cream Pie

Homemade Ice Cream Pie

Oh, Rochester!

Ok, I’m sure there are some that don’t recognize that call.  But I do.  Does that make me old.  Well! maybe.  As I do remember the days of the Jack Benny Show and him, among other things, calling for his butler Rochester.  Another thing Jack did, was put his hand to his cheek and declare, “WELL!”.  Now, for the record, I’d like to say all those shows I watched were re-runs.  But none the less, he will forever be etched in my childhood memories.

One memory that I do not recall, and only because it was well before my time, was Jello Ice Cream.  Once upon a time, there was a Jello Ice Cream Powder.  This product has long since left the shelves, but in my quest for a great picture to go with my great recipe I found a couple that I would like to share.

Oh Rochester!

Buttermilk Ice Cream

Buttermilk Ice Cream

Summer is a time for vacation.  A time to spend with the family and to make some well deserving memories that will last a life time.  With the economy as it is, stay-cations are becoming more of a reality.  Not to worry though, there are many things you can do at home to inspire memories that might just be a bit more fulfilling than that lost trip to Disneyland.

Using July (National Ice Cream Month) as our inspiration. let’s use our imagination and see what we can conger up.

Civil War recipe ~ Idiots Delight

Civil War recipe ~ Idiots Delight

I know, I know!  That’s not a picture of a cake.  But, there is more than one Idiot’s Delight.  So thought I’d dazzle you with both.  This picture is of an MGM movie called Idiots Delight starring Clark Gable and Norma Shearer in 1939.  Now I know you’re thinking that isn’t even close to the civil war era, but hey……. made ya look! 😛

Here’s the recipe

Civil War Recipe ~ Confederate Johnnie Cakes

Civil War Recipe ~ Confederate Johnnie Cakes

With experience growing among the Confederate soldiers, personal modifications to the uniform became prevalent.  The need for long boots, long coats, long sabers, buck gauntlets with long cuffs (gloves), and knapsacks filled with essentials soon went by the way-side.

Western Coffee Cake

I wanted to share one of the easiest coffee cake recipes I’ve ever come across.  I’ve altered it a bit, here and there to match my desired taste.  But, I won’t be offended if you do the same.

It’s fairly easy and though it may not be the best, it is by me.

Cowboy Cobbler

  • 1 quart Tomatoes
  • 2/3 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Nutmeg
  • Pie crust

Cut tomatoes in small pieces and mix with sugar, nutmeg.  Rinse jar with 1 cup water.  Add this water to the mixture and stir.  Put half of mixture in 1 1/2 quart casserole dish.

HERE YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF OPTIONS for the crust:

Roll pie crust into a thin sheet and fit to bottom of pan.  Add tomato mixture.  Then roll crust thin and place on top to fit to dish.

OR instead of crust, pinch dough into small dumplings and sprinkle over mixture.

Bake at 350^F for 25-30 minutes.
